TCP Login Instructions for The Familiar Spirit BBS:
Why would you want to use TCP/IP anyway?
TCP connections via FirstClass allow you to make local calls to long distance boards. You will save money on your phone bill, and enable access to a TCP/IP FirstClass BBS when all of it’s modem lines are filled up.
Is there a catch?
Sort of. TCP connections tend to be somewhat less smooth than 14.4k modem connections. The speed is dependent on the number of other TCP callers online, and the amount of traffic problems on the Internet altogether. Generally it ranges from the equivalent of 14.4k to 2400, when many users are connecting via TCP and general net problems are extreme. However, being that it’s effectively a local call from anywhere in the world, you can be more leisurely, and browse forums while your files download. It is also a little tricky to configure, though that only needs to be done once.
What Mac users need:
Macintosh users need an Apple control panel called MacTCP; the current version of which is 2.06. Mac users also need a connection module, which is often a second control panel, unless they are hardwired into the net. The best connection module may be MacPPP 2.01 which is available on BBS' and the net as freeware. Alternatives include InterSLIP and commercial SLIP modules. Of the commercial SLIP variety, I am personally fond of Versatilities SLIP from Synergy Software, which I use on myself because of it's reliability. Most importantly, the Mac user needs is a SLIP or PPP or Ethernet connection to the internet. The former two are affordable ways of accessing the full power of the Internet. SLIP and PPP access can be gained by subscribing to a full Internet provider for a monthly fee; this is still usually far more affordable than long distance calling. You should also have FirstClass Client 2.6 or later as well as a high speed modem.
What Windows users need:
Basically, the exact same as the Mac users, but the software is different. You will need a WinSock.DLL configured on the PC, as well as Chameleon TCP/IP or InterCon TCP/Connect II or Trumpet Winsock. I believe a version of PPP is available for Windows as well.
TCP configuration:
For those not highly adept in UNIX, it is very difficult to configure TCP software. I strongly recommend that you call a technician at your provider’s site and ask to be walked through the installation process, as it will vary greatly from provider to provider and from software to software. The TCP enabler is the most arcane of the two; the SLIP or PPP module requires both a configuration and a connection script which enters your password and ID for your Internet provider's login. Be relieved that your TCP setup will only need to be done once.
Configuring FirstClass 2.6 for TCP connections:
TCP/IP must be chosen as the connection method for the settings file*. The Server field must read the IP address of that BBS. TFS’s is necronomi.com . In the Connection Setup-> Advanced Settings, the Port number must be set appropriately. The default is 3000, but for TFS the correct number is 3004. Save!
How do I connect?
Make your TCP software connect to the net. Then launch FirstClass and login to a TCP enabled FirstClass BBS. That’s all.
*I have also included a pair of "fcp"s to be installed in your FCP subfolder. These will enable you to connect to both Port 3000 and 3004 systems without constantly having to edit the advanced settings over and over again. Thus, your connection method to TFS would be "3004TCP-IP.FCP".
